Stephanie Ellrott of the Royal Institute of British Architects
What do you do?
I am the Head of Venues at the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) which offers 24 event spaces. RIBA is
just opposite the Chinese Embassy, at 66 Portland Place.
What is RIBA’s role today?
RIBA was founded in 1834 for ‘the advancement of
architecture and the knowledge of the arts and sciences
connected therewith’. But it has always been a meeting,
learning and exhibition space. My department raises
revenue through lettings of the RIBA facilities, which
helps fund activities that the RIBA charity is involved in.
What specific skills do you bring to your work?
As a team we know everything about conferences,
product launches and parties – large and small. We
need to be meticulous planners, good with creative
ideas, lateral thinkers to cope with last minute crises
and, of course, diplomats to keep everyone happy!
What do you like about your work?
Everyday is different and we meet new people all the
time. Of course, our clients are lovely. Sometimes they
can be demanding but they are the best kind because
they know what they want and that is easy to deal with.
Is there a reason why RIBA is in Marylebone?
Portland Place is home to lots of professional HQs and
I think we are all attracted by the elegant surroundings
and the excellent transport facilities. RIBA is minutes
from Great Portland Street, Regent’s Park and Oxford
Circus tube stations and is well located for King’s Cross,
Euston and Paddington stations, too, with good links to
all the major London airports. Also, Marylebone has an
extremely creative feel and is full of professional people.
So if you ever need a web designer, a lawyer or an HR
specialist, you have a good local pool to call upon.
What else do you like about Marylebone?
I love the whole ‘urban village’ feel, the smart and
bustling high street, the green spaces and architectural
gems. The extension of the BBC building has definitely
added some additional flair to the area, which now
buzzes with celebrities, many of whom regularly visit
the RIBA restaurant. The likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber,
Bob Geldof, Dermot O’Leary, Dom Joly and Ewan
McGregor have all been spotted there!
What is it like in Marylebone before Christmas?
There’s a fantastic atmosphere. It’s perfect for shopping,
as it has a real mixture of boutiques that you don’t find
anywhere else – and I particularly like Daunt Books. The
bars and restaurants are very special, too. I like a cocktail
at The Langham – and Vinoteca is superb for supper.
